Hemp × Cork Acoustic Biomaterial
Hemp × Cork is an experimental acoustic biomaterial developed as part of the ongoing Hempforma research into renewable, low-impact materials for healthier and more sensory-friendly interior environments.
The material combines 50% shredded industrial hemp shives with 50% granulated cork supplied by Corticeira Amorim, using a bio-based binder. The research emerged from a professional research residency at Amorim in Portugal, where cork processing technologies, acoustic performance, tactile qualities, lightweight construction and circular approaches to material production were explored. Following the residency, Amorim provided granulated cork samples for further material experimentation in Lithuania.
Hemp shives and cork are brought together to explore the potential synergy between two renewable plant-based resources. Their naturally porous and lightweight structures offer possibilities for developing materials that combine sound absorption, tactility, low weight and a distinctive natural surface. Rather than concealing the raw materials, the composite retains their visible texture, allowing the origin and physical character of both hemp and cork to become part of the aesthetic experience.
The presented 130 × 130 × 25 mm acoustic sample represents an early stage of this material research. Its acoustic properties are intended for further testing and optimisation, with the aim of developing larger acoustic surfaces, interior elements and components for mobile sensory environments, including spaces designed for neurodivergent children. The wider research investigates how natural materials can contribute not only to acoustic comfort but also to more tactile, calming and human-centred interior environments.
The experiment forms part of a broader investigation into bioeconomy, circular material systems and regenerative design, exploring how locally available hemp biomass can be combined with cork-industry materials to create a new generation of lightweight acoustic composites for architecture and interior design.
