WASTE MATTERS: CIRCULAR MATERIALS FROM ORGANIC WASTE
Waste Matters is not a single material, but an adaptable design system that transforms locally available organic by-products into finished surfaces and objects. Developed in Vilnius, it has been explored using spent coffee grounds, orange peels, beetroot residues, brewer’s spent grain, buckwheat husks, and seaweed such as Sargassum. Each waste stream provides its own colour, texture, and material character, while formulations can be developed around the residues generated by a particular café, restaurant, food producer, brand, neighbourhood, or city.
Combined with natural binders, the prepared residues form bio-composites that can be cast, pressed, applied in layers directly onto panels and furniture, or shaped by hand. The system enables modular tiles, large-format panels, seamless wall and counter finishes, sculptural objects, tableware concepts, and bespoke installations. Formats, textures, and finishes are produced to order, allowing the same material approach to move from small collectible products to full-scale architectural applications. Selected thermoplastic formulations can also be reheated and reworked, extending their useful life.
Moving beyond material experimentation, Waste Matters develops finished, commercially available surfaces and commissioned applications for architects, interior designers, hospitality, and retail brands. Realised projects include Nescafé Dolce Gusto coffee-bar cladding at ArtVilnius 2025 and a café-bar façade for I Am Nature in Singapore in 2026.
At its core, Waste Matters proposes a hyperlocal circular model: organic residues are collected, processed, and returned as functional materials to the spaces and communities where they originated. Waste becomes more than a resource — it becomes a visible material identity, a record of place, and a medium for design storytelling.
