STONE WASTE IS BLISS
Stone Waste is Bliss addresses industrial waste in the natural stone and ceramic industries by repurposing discarded granite, quartzite, limestone, and travertine into ceramic surfaces. The project was initiated by designer Agne Kucerenkaite and developed in collaboration with Lithuanian stone-processing company Akmenstata. The company generates approximately 8m³ of stone waste per month in the form of edges, offcuts, and small pieces. While some are used for road fillers, most, though non-toxic, remain underutilised, leading to unnecessary disposal costs.
Stone Waste is Bliss repurposes natural stone waste in three ways. Travertine, quartzite, and limestone are milled to replace conventional silica and calcium carbonate in ceramic production. Dark granite, embedded in the ceramic surface, reacts to high-temperature firing, forming organic, flower-like patterns due to its iron content, eliminating the need for added colourants. Additionally, larger granite pieces are precisely cut and bonded to ceramics through controlled melting during firing, removing the need for adhesives.
With production viability established, the project is advancing through a partnership with a Portuguese factory specialising in handmade tile manufacturing, merging artisanal techniques with industrial waste reuse. Targeted at architects and designers, seeking sustainable material alternatives, Stone Waste is Bliss presents a scalable solution for architectural and interior applications. The process also enables integrated functional elements such as handles, hooks, and small shelves, expanding ceramic surfaces beyond traditional flat tiles.
